    IMAP, POP3 & SMTP

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 by Will Elkadi

What is IMAP, POP3 & SMTP?

IMAPInternet Message Access Protocol – is a protocol used for retrieving messages from an online email server and bringing them to your local email client (or email application) while leaving your messages on the email server. The server remains the administrative source for all of your messages, which can help your business greatly in cases of accidental deletion. IMAP also provides support for online and offline operation.

POP3Post Office Protocol – is the most commonly used protocol for retrieving messages from an online email server. Once you have retrieved your messages via POP3 from a server to your local email client, you can only see those messages on the system that you used to initially retrieve them.

Therefore, the main difference between IMAP and POP3 is that when you configure an email client for IMAP you can access your emails from absolutely any system, whereas with POP3 you can only access the retrieved messages with the local email client – i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, etc…

SMTPSimple Mail Transfer Protocol – is an Internet protocol used for sending your messages to the email server. All email clients are configured for SMTP in order to send messages to the email server, where in turn the server sends the messages to desired host recipient also via SMTP.

The Importance of Autoresponders in Email

Monday, March 2nd, 2009 by Will Elkadi

Many companies get hundreds or thousands of emails a day. Many of these emails are questions from clients or potential customers. If you find it difficult to keep up with all of these emails, and don’t want to risk losing potential customers consider using an autoresponder.

Autoresponders are easy to set up and can save you much precious time. Of course, you could always hire additional staff to answer emails, but this can end up costing you more than you are prepared to pay out. You can always work longer hours and take care of the emails by yourself, but that doesn’t seem very appealing. These options may work for some, but doesn’t is sound easier to use autoresponders instead.

Obviously, emails are extremely important in the business world. This is our way to communicate with others over the Internet, sending messages in a matter of seconds. Emails can also be used by visitors in order to give you feedback on your services, website, and other concerns or to simply ask you a question or get a quote free of charge. By using an autoresponder, you can quickly reply to hundreds of emails without lifting a finger.

Another concept that autoresponders can be used for is to email potential customers and clients information on future products, special offers, free samples, and anything else you find important to your visitors. In addition, autoresponders are a great way to build trust and a working relationship with your visitors and customers.

It is easy to find autoresponders in many different formats, such as programs that run through email clients, scripts that operate through website servers and third-party applications hosted by autoresponder service providers. Some companies offer free autoresponders. Free may seem like a good idea, however, you may want to review all the features before trying one out. There can be downsides to free programs that are non-existent in a purchased full version.

When creating an autoresponder pay attention to the content – the material can be long or short, and needs to be easy to follow. For example, when somebody signs up on your mailing list, always let them know what it is they are signing up for. In this way, customers will begin to anticipate your emails. Always create enticing messages in your autoresponders, letting readers know they are receiving great content by signing up with you.

By using autoresponders, you can allow your visitors to feel connected with the knowledge that somebody is there for their benefit. So, try it out and see if it makes a difference. You have nothing to lose and only satisfied customers to gain!
